Calibrating the instrument: pH measurement To obtain accurate results, a two-point calibration must be carried out. It is recommended that the following solutions be used: pH 7.00 and 4.01 for acidic samples pH 7.00 and 10.01 for alkaline samples Carry out a three-point calibration using pH 7.00, 4.01 and 10.01 if you do not know the expected pH value of the sample. It is recommended that you calibrate using pH 7.00 first. Conductivity measurement For a conductivity measurement, a single-point calibration is sufficient, for example at 1413 μS/cm. For greater accuracy, a multi-point calibration can also be carried out. Nitrate (NO3-) ion selective electrode for 300 seriesThe new electrode is suitable for the LAQUA WQ-300 series from Horiba and offers precise and reliable measurements for ions in aqueous solutions. It is characterised by its user-friendly handling and environmentally friendly design and can be used for a wide range of applications.Features:Measurement parameters: Nitrate (NO3-) Solid-state electrodes that do not require refillingDouble junction made of porous sintered polyethyleneIntegrated temperature sensor Environmentally friendly design made from bio-based plasticSupplied with calibration and ionic strength adjustment solutionsRobust housing made of polycarbonate and PVCLow maintenance, simply rinse and sealWaterproof according to IP67Linearity in measurement range:The range where the calibration curve has linearity is called the measurement range. When lower concentration is measured where the linearity is not established, perform calibration at two points in the lower concentration range.Influence of pH:The impact of the pH may cause a decrease in the slope of the ion selective electrode, or parallel shifting of the calibration curve. To prevent these effects, set the pH to an appropriate value in advance and keep it constant.Interfering ions:Ion selective electrodes have good selectivity with respect to the ions to be measured, but they may react to the other ions. When using the ion electrode method, it is important to know the effects of coexistent ions and take measures to avoid them. Interfering ions may form compounds with poor solubility or may form complex salts with the structure material of the ion selective membrane, these may to have a significant impact on the measured value.Conditioning:An electrode is conditioned by soaking it in a standard solution for 1 hour or longer. Use a standard solution whose concentration is 100 mg/L or more.In the following cases, perform conditioning of the electrode before calibration.• Before the first use.• Before use after storage for 2 weeks or longer.• If the electrode is less responsive.Calibration:Always calibrate with at least 2 calibration solutions which are 1 decade apart and bracket the expected measurement value.Use fresh calibration solutions and do not re-use them.• Below 10 ppm (mg/L)First solution between 1 and 10ppmSecond solution between 10 and 50 ppm• Between 10 and 100 ppm (mg/L)First solution between 10 and 100ppmSecond solution between 100 and 1000 ppm• Above 100 ppm (mg/L)First solution between 100 and 1000ppmSecond solution above 1000 ppmFurther information can be found in the data sheets in the download area of the store Manufacturer article number: 3200986784 (300-NO3-C)

Why Measure Nitrate in Water?

Nitrate is a water-soluble nitrogen compound and can occur in different water, nutrient and environmental samples.

Regular determination of nitrate levels can help identify changes at an early stage and better assess water or nutrient quality.

Nitrate as an Important Measurement Parameter

Nitrate measurement can be relevant, for example, for:

  • Irrigation water
  • Nutrient solutions
  • Agriculture and crop production
  • Surface waters
  • Groundwater and well water
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Process and industrial water
  • Research and experimental applications

Which measurement solution is suitable depends in particular on how frequently you measure, which samples are analysed and whether additional parameters besides nitrate need to be determined.

Which Nitrate Measurement Solution Is Right for Your Application?

Not every nitrate measurement places the same requirements on the measuring device.

If you want to specifically determine nitrate, a compact single-parameter measuring device may be the right solution.

If, on the other hand, you want to measure nitrate together with other water parameters, a flexible multiparameter measurement system is a suitable choice.

Solution 1: Measure Nitrate Quickly with HORIBA LAQUAtwin NO₃

Would you like to measure nitrate quickly, compactly and directly on site?

The HORIBA LAQUAtwin NO₃ is a compact ion-selective meter for direct nitrate measurement. The meter, sensor and display are integrated into one mobile system.

Only a small sample volume is required for measurement. This makes the device particularly suitable for quick individual measurements directly at the point of use.

Suitable if you:

  • want to specifically measure nitrate
  • require quick individual measurements
  • want to measure directly on site
  • only have a small sample volume available
  • prefer a compact nitrate meter
  • do not require comprehensive multiparameter analysis

Solution 2: Nitrate as Part of a Multiparameter Analysis with the WQ-330

Does your measurement task go beyond nitrate determination alone?

The HORIBA LAQUA WQ-330 is a mobile 3-channel multiparameter meter that can be combined with different compatible sensors.

With a suitable nitrate ion sensor, nitrate measurement can be integrated into a more comprehensive measurement system.

Your benefits:

  • nitrate as part of a more comprehensive water analysis
  • up to three measurement channels
  • different sensors can be flexibly combined
  • measure multiple parameters with one device
  • mobile measurement system for professional applications
  • adaptable to different measurement tasks

  • Greenhouse production
  • Irrigation management
  • Nutrient solutions
  • Agricultural consulting

Water and Environmental Analysis

Outside agriculture, nitrate also plays a role in the assessment of different water samples.

Possible applications include:

  • Surface waters
  • Well water and groundwater
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Process water
  • Industrial water
  • Water treatment
  • Research and laboratory applications

Measure Directly on Site and Detect Changes More Quickly

Mobile nitrate meters make it possible to record measurement values directly at the respective point of use.
